Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Bonus Activity : In Flander Fields

As the new century dawned , New Zealand settled into a period of relative calm . The calm lasted for about 15 years but came to an end when World War 1 erupted in Europe . The War lasted for almost 5 years ending the lives of 15,000 New Zealanders . It also claimed the lives of men and women from countries around the world .We remember those brave men and women on ANZAC day . On the 25th Of April . There was a poem written for the fallen soldiers . The poem is called " In Flanders Fields "
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

This Poem makes me feel , Safe , Happy and Thankful . Thankful because , They fought for this peace and didn't just buy it . Even though It wasn't easy , The soldiers fought with their lives in order to let the next generation have some piece and quiet without some war . Happy because we can have some peace without another war to corrupt that peace. Safe , Because they fought for us to let us live today. How can we not thank them?

  1. Hi LJ,
Nice post! I can see that you took time to reflect on your feelings about the poem. I really liked how you mentioned three reasons why you like the poem and went on to explain these reasons.
When you mentioned that made you feel happy I did not quite understand why but once I did read it further I totally got it.
    Keep up the good work!
    Kia Kaha,
    Patricia
