My Goals For Term 3

For this task , I had to decide my goals for this term because a new term has started and our first task was to write down our Writing , Reading , Maths , A personal goal and even a teacher goal . I spent a long time trying to figure this out and we had to use the S.E.E structure to define what we mean . I think everyone had to come up with their own Writing , Reading , Maths goals because I think my teacher knew there were different things we had to work on .

Winter Learning Journey : Pest Free By 2050

Activity 2: After your great visit to the Otorohanga bird house it is time to hop back onto the bus and head towards the Hawke’s Bay – your resting place for the evening. Hawke’s Bay is a beautiful region of New Zealand. It is known for its wineries and gorgeous scenery. When you arrive in Napier, the largest city in the region, you go for a walk through Waitangi Regional Park and notice that many of the leaves on the native trees have been damaged. Curious Kiwi tells you that they were damaged by possums, non-native predators, from Australia. People in New Zealand are working hard to trap and kill these predators. Their goal is to remove all of the possums (and other predators) by 2050. Go to the ‘Predator Free 2050 website’ to read more about their work.
In this activity , I had to blog about New Zealand being pest free by 2050 . In my opinion , I think that New Zealand being pest free is great because the pests in New Zealand damage our nature so I think killing all the pests in New Zealand to make it pest free is good.

What do you think about it?

Would you want to keep pests alive or would you kill them ?

Winter Learning Journey : Day 3 : Wild Eyes

Day #3
Activity 1: Curious Kiwi, a native New Zealand bird, is your tour guide for today. He is going to take you to visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park where many of his aunties and uncles currently live. The bird park is a five hour drive from Dargaville so you hit the road right after breakfast and arrive in Otorohanga at lunch time. As you walk through the birdhouse you learn about the work being done to conserve and protect the native birds of New Zealand. You decide to help out by ‘adopting’ a native animal. Visit the ‘Adopt a Critter page’ on the Otorohanga bird house website to choose one animal to adopt. On your blog, tell us the name of the animal that you chose and   write a little bit about them. What kind of animal are they? What do they eat? Where do they normally live? You can use Google to help you with your research.

Here I have my choices - The Kea , Tui , Brown Kiwi , The Brown Teal ( Pateke ) , The blue duck , ( whio ) , And the NZ falcon
( Karearea) are all native birds to New Zealand. But I have to choose one to adopt and pick..... The Kea . I have now adopted a kea which makes me the owner of one . Though I have found out that this species are endangered .

Something About The Kea : The sexes are similar although the male kea is more larger with a more outward and curving upper mandible . The color of the creature is an olive green with scarlet underwing coverts . The iris is a dark brown with the mandible and the legs are a dark brown to black. It’s size is 46cm . The juveniles crown immediately after fledging . The color of the nape is olive/yellow and the cere and the mandible are a bright orange - yellow .

Kea Habitation : The Kea Inhabit the south island high country and alps
Principle / Threats : Degradation of habitat by fire
  • Over-grazing by domestic stock and browsing by feral animals
  • Predation at nests by introduced mammals such as stoats.
  • Illegal shooting and poisoning
  • And Illegal capture and trading in Kea.

Winter Learning Journey : 5 Questions I would Ask Laura Decker In an Interview

IALT : Come Up With 5 Questions I would Ask Laura Decker In an Interview.
For this task in the Winter learning Journey , I was tasked with coming up with 5 questions to ask this famous person who was known for sailing the world . AT THE AGE OF 14 !!! but she didn’t do it with other people , Because she did it alone .

My Questions I would like to ask her are?

How did you feel when you went by yourself on a journey so far?

What country are you from?

What made you go so far by yourself , Like what kept you going?

Why did you decide sailing at a young age?

What Motivated You To Sail Around The World?

To me , I was actually surprised to come across a video with someone as young as 14 or 16 , sailing the world alone . I always thought that sailing would require you to be like in your 20’s or something Like that . As I’m thinking about it , I wonder how experienced she was at the age of 14 .

Winter Learning Journey : New Zealand By Land And Sea

After our ride through Auckland , It was time to start exploring the rest of the country . We had to go to three different places . Rangintoto , Karekare, and then to Tane Mahuta . The oldest living Kauri tree in New Zealand . We all had to start at Rangitoto , The largest volcano in New Zealand. This task asked me choose which one of the three that I liked the most and why. So I chose Tane Mahuta. Why? Because I find it great that this tree is still standing and I wonder why it is named Tane Mahuta . Was it the strongest tree here ? , How old is it ? It came to me as a surprise because it is between 1,250 years and 2,500 years . Really it did come to me as a surprise because I never knew this before.

A little something about The Kauri Tree : Kauri trees have sensitive surface roots and foot traffic would damage it so I think a fence around the tree would be reasonable . But when people go to meet the tree , they have to clean their shoes in order to go to it because something dirty may damage the roots .
Related imageI think the coolest part for me was that I got to take a photo with the Kauri tree .In my opinion , I think it is really important to New Zealand .

WLJ - My New Zealand Flag

For this Winter Learning Journey Task , I had to come up with my own version of the New Zealand flag . As you can see , I have many stars covering some parts of the flag along with the New Zealand fern , A union jack , and a kiwi .

The Stars
I came up with this Idea because It had something to do with Matariki . The Maori new year . I put seven stars there to represent Matariki because It was something special to New Zealand and the Maori culture which I think is pretty important to the Maori people as It signifies the new year .

The Fern
For this Idea , I decided to think of something to do with New Zealand's nature and then I came up with a fern to represent the nature here . As I also thought that the kiwi has something to do with nature in New Zealand.

The Kiwi
As you may know , the kiwi was always a known representation of New Zealand or of the nature in this land . I felt like including this in the flag because I think It would have been a great addition to the flag . It is put on many things to represent New Zealand . The Native creature's home.

The Union Jack
Me myself , I felt like I needed to put the Union Jack in there because I think it is something important so it was put on the actual flags . This isn't the only country to have a union jack . Many others have it . Like Britain , Cook island and many more . So it represented many countries . And I think it meant different things to their cultures .

Thanks for reading !! Bye!

LJ - Kiwisport Reflection

Golden Child

The challenges for me , was trying to keep up running because I had to run during some of the games but even though I was mostly tired and my legs were a little saw  , I kept on running because my team was trying to win.The other challenge for me was , Shooting the ball in quickly because we were trying to get the other team out during golden child because shooting in the ball a bit too fast wouldn't get my team points. The Other challenge for me was , Was trying to get the ball back after I shot the ball because I was tired and I had to jog for it.
The best part of the lesson for me , was playing golden child . Because I found that a fun game the first time I played it.Something else I liked about it was , that people would try their best to shoot the basketball or run around the court to get to the other side .What I also liked about it was that the rush to get the goals in was something I thought to be fun  .

To be honest , there was nothing that I didn't like about it because it was a fun session because of the games. I think that it was a great session , But I wish it wasn't our last.Even though I loved playing those games , I wanted  to experience another basketball game if there was one for us to play. I felt a little sad for it being the last session of this term . I just wanted to have 1 more day of basketball next monday before it finished . What I also feel is that I would have loved to play a actual basketball game not like shineline basketball .I think everyone else would have liked that.

I read this article and I couldn't believe that Phelps is racing a shark . I'm wondering how fast Phelps can go vs a fast shark that can go 35 miles .
